Let me tell you a little something about my hippie parents. Two of their favorite activities are hiking/camping on the Appalachian Trail — they just got back from a full week of it — and going to concerts to see classics like Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. Today my mom called to tell me all about a concert they’re going to in Lancaster this weekend (which is a three-hour drive from their house). She was most excited to report that David Frizzell and Shelly West would be performing. Don’t worry, I’d never heard of them either. But she requested that I listen to their hit duet, “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.” As it turns out, that little number was the country song of year in 1981, and the pair was the top vocal duo of the year in 1980-1983. Even singers I have heard of are performing it these days (Blake Shelton/Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban/Sugarland).
So on to my dollar purchase of the day. Actually, it was a $0.99 purchase — thanks iTunes. I bought the song, which I plan to include in a compilation CD to be gifted to my mom for mother’s day. Don’t tell.
