the fuddruckers hot dog

dollar hot dog fuddruckers

We found ourselves driving up Route 1 today to run a few errands, and as luck would have it, the Saugus Fuddruckers was offering $1 hot dogs. I’m not a hot dog kind of girl — it’s been many years since I’ve consumed one — so I opted for the $2 hamburger. But Tim went for the dog, so we’re counting it for the daily deal.

Does this look like a normal hot dog bun to you? If not, let me tell you a little something about New England. In this part of the country, hot dogs and lobster rolls come in split-top buns with flat sides. Even the plain buns you find at the grocery store are sold this way. The logic is pretty wise — using this kind of bun allows you to butter and toast the sides before adding your meat into the split top. If you aren’t in the area and want to give these New England buns a try, King Arthur Flour sells a pan you can use to make your own.

the royal wedding doughnut

Happy royal wedding day! I’m not one to get very festive for an event like this, but I did take a few minutes this afternoon to watch some BBC video clips. While I was in the royal spirit, I decided to walk across the street to Dunkin’ Donuts to try a royal wedding doughnut, since today is the last day they’re available. Oh, you didn’t know there was a royal wedding donut? Apparently, the chief executive of Dunkin’s parent company is British born and bred, so they figured a culinary tribute was in order. A press release from the New England-based chain says the heart shape signifies the love between Prince William and Catherine, and the doughnut is filled with jelly to represent how their lives are to be ever-filled with happiness. The white frosting is reminiscent of the traditional white wedding gown, and the chocolate drizzle is symbolic of William’s love for chocolate.

I was a little worried the Dunkin’ by my house would be sold out of this special treat, but there were three left when I got there! And $0.89 apiece, if you were wondering.

the throat drops

one beacon street

Today I bid a fond farewell to One Beacon Street, the office building where I’ve worked for the past year. The 34th floor (the very top floor) has been a real treat. We’re moving to a new building a few blocks away, and I’ve spent the last many weeks going through piles of papers and stacks of files and cubicles full of broken computers to determine what to keep, what to shred, what to trash. In the meantime, I’ve contracted an annoying spring cold, complete with exhaustion, non-stop runny nose, disgusting cough, daggers in my throat, etc. So when I needed a little break from the moving madness today, I took respite at our building’s convenience shop. I was thrilled to find these soothing Ricola herb throat drops for just over a dollar. Just what I needed.

the bobbins

dmc embroidery floss cardboard bobbins

Today was a little hectic, but I feel calmed by the fact that my embroidery thread is well organized. Michael’s sells a 56-pack of DMC brand cardboard bobbins for $2, but my 50%-off coupon made it a perfect fit for my dollar limit.

My thread collection has been growing ever since Tim’s grandma gave me needlepoint lessons over Christmas break. She has bobbins galore, full of any color you might desire. So while I should spend more time honing my skills before I go overboard buying the materials, what I really want to do is work on getting my thread collection to match hers. Maybe in a few months (or years, depending on my progress) I’ll show you the finished product of my first real project. I bought the goldfinches crewel kit at Purl last Thanksgiving and I’m pretty excited at the thought of hanging it on my wall someday.

the song (for my mother)

mom hiking appalachian trail

Let me tell you a little something about my hippie parents. Two of their favorite activities are hiking/camping on the Appalachian Trail — they just got back from a full week of it — and going to concerts to see classics like Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. Today my mom called to tell me all about a concert they’re going to in Lancaster this weekend (which is a three-hour drive from their house). She was most excited to report that David Frizzell and Shelly West would be performing. Don’t worry, I’d never heard of them either. But she requested that I listen to their hit duet, “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.” As it turns out, that little number was the country song of year in 1981, and the pair was the top vocal duo of the year in 1980-1983. Even singers I have heard of are performing it these days (Blake Shelton/Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban/Sugarland).

So on to my dollar purchase of the day. Actually, it was a $0.99 purchase — thanks iTunes. I bought the song, which I plan to include in a compilation CD to be gifted to my mom for mother’s day. Don’t tell.

the jelly beans

jelly beans cvs chocolate nests

I needed a quick and easy treat to take to Easter dinner yesterday. (Side note: Easter dinner was good. Lamb by Chelsea, to-die-for roast by Vicki, classic green bean casserole by Colleen, best rolls ever by Natalie, a fun new combo of pineapple with carrots by Amy, a great salad by Carolina, and so on and so forth.) I decided to make little birds’ nests by smothering chow mein noodles with a sweet and simple mixture of peanut butter and chocolate. I knew I could easily find a $1 item to fill the nests, and CVS came through for me with a big bag of jelly beans. (It actually rang up as $0.88, so I saved myself a dime. Good thing, because I’m pretty sure my dollar purchases occasionally stretch into the $1.10 region.)

I figured an outdoor photo would be appropriate, given the beautiful Easter day and the subject of the image, but it wasn’t until I made the decision that I realized there is no grass anywhere near my building. We stopped off at a park on the way to dinner to snap the photo.

the rubber spatula

crate and barrel outlet rubber spatula

I need someone to explain to me how the Crate & Barrel Outlet system works, because it confuses me. I go there thinking everything will be discounted compared to regular Crate & Barrel, but so many of the items are the exact same — for the same price. And then there are some products that are made for and sold only in the outlet store. So it’s not a typical setup where the outlet store gets the overruns and past seasons’ items from the regular store. But I guess that doesn’t stop me from hitting the outlet when I can — every now and then I find a clearance deal there that wouldn’t have come up in normal Crate & Barrel. Today’s find is this $0.99 vibrant green rubber spatula, which has now been gifted to my mother, who was very much in need of a new rubber spatula.

the re-tale raffle ticket

Let me tell you about a true Winston-Salem gem. Re-tale is a great little second-hand shop on Burke Street, and it’s run by two women who are former Boston residents. Page had been raving about the store the last time I was in town, but it was closed the day we tried to visit. So today was the day, and it was a success. Page found a darling dress for baby Faye and a few neat oval frames for a silhouette project she’s working on, and I purchased an unusual dollar item — a raffle ticket for the great blue birdcage you can see through the shop window in the image above. Sure, there’s no space for a large birdcage in my apartment (and how would I transport it to Boston anyway?) but it was only a dollar and the proceeds go to the local Habitat for Humanity BirdFest fundraiser.

I also came away with a few new project ideas. Check out these neat cake stands fashioned from eclectic candle stick holders and platters. I just need to figure out what sort of glue to use.

Also, am I the only one who has grand plans for creating homemade soaps? Anytime I see prettily packaged locally made soaps, I decide I want to give it a whirl myself. Maybe someday…

the barbecue dip

Well, here I am in the South — where everyone is friendly and life runs at a slightly slower pace. On the agenda today was a morning walk through the neighborhood, an afternoon Easter egg hunt, and dinner from Mr. Barbecue. Our selections for tonight were the chopped pork barbecue, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and — for $1 — two containers of dip (otherwise known as sauce). We put the pork on Kaiser rolls and drenched the sandwiches in the dip — so tasty. The potato salad was a real highlight as well — surprisingly sweet and very creamy. I realize the food in the image below may not look super appetizing, so just trust me on this one.

lazy 5 ranch emu north carolina

Is this emu a little scary-looking or what? How about when it sticks its head in your car? We saw — and fed — lots of exotic animals today at the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville, NC. If you’re ever in this neck of the woods, I recommend you visit the ranch. It’s home to 750 animals from six different continents! The kids loved it, and it was quite enjoyable from an adult perspective as well.

Here are the crazy kiddies. I’ve established myself as the favorite auntie, but for some reason Everett (far left) called me Tim multiple times today. The twins were wild as ever, but also cute as ever.

But on to the dollar deal of the day. We dined on a picnic of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grapes, bananas, etc. for lunch, so it seemed necessary to top it off with ice cream. The snack shack at the ranch had a variety of flavors from a local ice cream company, but the least expensive option was $2. So I got smart — Page was already purchasing two scoops ($3) for herself and her boys, so I decided to pay her a dollar to have her upgrade to the three-scoop for $4 option. Good idea, right? Our three flavors were cake batter, chocolate, and cookies and cream. Delicious.
